Possible: Sainthood

I was walking back from the Market today (the dining hall, not the actual supermarket), and I saw a girl wearing a shirt that read "Possible: sainthood." It was just in passing, so I didn't really get to see what the shirt was representing. But it struck me. Here's why.

My friend Chris gave a talk at the Rock (read: Thursday night praise and worship gathering) about the will of God. As he mentioned, all of us are called to become saints. It's important for us to recognize our own unique call to sainthood, but it's just as important to realize that others have the same path. So many times I am selfish and not as eager to love my friends, students, or even strangers as I am called to do. Instead, I get jealous when a friend pays more attention to somebody else, or I get frustrated if my student doesn't apply himself in class, or I get mad if a stranger is tailgating me. Not only am I forgetting my call to sainthood, but I'm forgetting other people's call too. Maybe my friend really needs that other friend in his life, so instead of getting jealous, I should pray for them both. Or maybe my student's lack of effort is because he has been burnt out working 40 hours a week. I should offer extra help during my office hours. Or maybe the stranger is tailgating because she is running late to visit her sick grandmother. I should pray that she gets there safely. Whoever the person, I believe that we can better follow God's will for ourselves when we remember that sainthood is possible for everyone, especially if we all strive to help each other get there.
