Spring Break 2009

It's mid-March. That means it's time for St. Patrick's day celebrations, March Madness, and yes, Spring Break. I started planning for this Spring Break back in December when I found out that I was accepted to present a paper at the Georgetown University Round Table. I had never visited Washington, DC nor presented a paper away from Tech, so I was excited! But I never could have predicted what an awesome trip it would turn out to be. Here are some highlights:

The conference itself was great. I loved being able to be a part of the sharing of ideas. I heard about some great new projects and got some thought-provoking feedback about my own research. It was fun to meet new people and see the faces of people whose research I read. I enjoyed catching up with Hillah, who was gracious enough to let me stay with her. She showed me the great restaurants and even the best place to get freshly-made cupcakes! :)

Since I am on Spring Break, I decided to stay an extra few days to tour the sites. I was lucky enough to have Jason come all the way from Southern California so I wouldn't have to see the sights by myself.

On Saturday night, we took the metro from Virginia, through DC, to Maryland. Just cause we could. It's an exciting adventure for Californians who are not used to entering new states. On Sunday, we saw the Washington Monument, White House, and History Museums. We also met up with some of my family that lives in the area. On Monday, we went on a tour of the U.S. Capitol, went to the Library of Congress, saw the building for the National Archives, and went to the Air and Space Museum. Then finally on Tuesday, we saw the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Wall Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, and the Pentagon (with its memorial, too). My feet are officially tired, but it was incredible to see so many historic places. :)

Now it's back to the grind. The end of the semester will be filled with research projects and lots of work to prepare Spanish assessments. Hopefully it will also bring some ideas of what I will be doing come fall. Here's hoping.

I'm glad you had an awesome time in DC. I really wish my car didn't suck so much and I could have made it down and hung out. Thankfully, I should have an awesome 2005 Toyota Corolla in a little over a week, so I'll be good and ready if you ever get near here again!
